NHS Coaching & Mentoring Projects

HumanTechnics has exceptional experience working with NHS organisations to develop Coaches, Mentors, GP Mentors and building a coaching culture through training leaders in Coaching and Mentoring skills. Here’s a little more information about our experience:

The NHS has a central role in the story of coaching in the UK simply because it trains and uses coaches at a scale that no other organisation does. At the same time it’s such a vast organisation that it’s unable to create the type of concentration of activity and successful outcomes that a smaller organisation with strong people development funding is able to achieve. This results in pockets of brilliance and a drive to try and replicate these in other areas.

The majority of the projects we’ve delivered are; University Postgraduate, Institute of Leadership Level 7, and Institute Level 5 accredited coaching training and mentoring training. GP mentors training has become a significant proportion of our NHS projects within the last few years and has proved very successful and effective.

bit about our history working with the NHS:

We ran the first large scale project in 2008-2009 training 180 people through a combination of our Postgraduate University accredited certificate and Institute of Leadership & Management level 7, for the West Midlands Coaching Collaborative (this pre-dates the formation of the Leadership Academies). This was the first time the new (at the time) ILM Coaching accreditation was used at any scale.

Over the years we have build on this experience becoming the main provider for both South East Leadership Academy and South West Leadership Academy. We have also delivered extensive multi-cohort projects with Southern Health, Hampshire Isle of Wight ICB, BOB ICB, Surrey Heartlands, Oxford University Hospitals, South Central Ambulance Service, Plymouth University Hospitals, University Hospitals Dorset, NHS Kent and Medway. Gloucestershire Hospitals, University Hospitals Southampton and many more.

In 2012 the NHS Leadership Academies formed with a strategic mission to increase Leadership capability across NHS England. Coaching became a hugely important intervention and an element of almost all work streams. For HumanTechnics it was an opportunity to deliver Coaching training programmes at scale. It was also an opportunity to be measured against other specialist Coaching and Mentoring training providers – many with exceptional reputations themselves. We were able to demonstrate that we could deliver a better training experience, better trained and more confident coaches, and we could do this through shorter and more compact programmes that cost less per person, and meant less time away from their normal working days for delegates.

Many providers looked to match our programme structure in terms of delegate contact time but without the expertise to deliver training that is more complex than it might at first appear.

We have trained many leaders at the most senior levels of the NHS. We have trained members of the national EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) team, and have delivered EDI focused Coaching and Mentoring projects for South East Leadership Academy and North East London ICB.
